In the nineties I had the pleasure of spending a break with trombonist Bill Bardin at Earthquake McGoon's. We were browsing photos on the wall, enjoying the curious traditions of wardrobe in the post WWII era of traditional jazz, and I asked him when the vest tradition started. He got heated up and said, "It was Scobey, dammit! If it weren't for him..."
Great story! I'd like to think the days of the red and white striped vests are behind us now!
