In the nineties I had the pleasure of spending a break with trombonist Bill Bardin at Earthquake McGoon's. We were browsing photos on the wall, enjoying the curious traditions of wardrobe in the post WWII era of traditional jazz, and I asked him when the vest tradition started. He got heated up and said, "It was Scobey, dammit! If it weren't for him..."
